Synopsis: A critical and controversial academic analysis of two of the largest Tibetan and Zen Buddhist organisations currently active in Britain - the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) and the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives (OBC), and how they have interpreted and adapted traditional Buddhist practices to the West.
The NKT was founded by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso in 1991 as a breakaway sect that has its roots in the Gelugpa school. This study covers the heated controversy over the Dorje Shugden protector practice, their campaign against the Dalai Lama, as well as the earlier unharmonious split from the FPMT, Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition. Kay's thorough and objective thesis poses important questions for all Western Buddhists of all schools concerning how traditional practices are transplanted and adapted in a new culture and environment, and the spectre of religious fundamentalism, and sectarianism.
The later part of the book offers an appraisal of the OBC, their English founder Rev.Peggy Jiyu-Kennett, their centres at Shasta Abbey and Throssel Hole and their Western and Christianized presentation of the traditional teachings from the original Japanese Soto Zen tradition. |
