Behind the Potala lies a sacred lake said to be inhabited by serpent-like beings called nagas, or Lu. In the middle of the lake, on a willow-covered island, is a small temple used by the Dalai Lamas as a place of meditation and retreat. The Lukhang`s murals illustrate the Buddhist path to liberation and guided the Dalai Lamas in the mystical contemplation of Dzogchen and the secret practices of the tantric tradition.
