He was raised in a Pure Land temple where his grandfather was abbot. He was ordained in a Soto Zen temple and then went to the Rinzai Zen temple Engaku-Ji, where he became a disciple of the great Zen master Soyen Shaku. Senzaki moved to the USA in 1905.
