Synopsis: Klein explains how logical conceptual thought, though dualistic, is itself used to bring about non-dualistic understanding and liberation. She shows how Tibetan Buddhist epistemology can be used in support of transformative religious experience.
From its inception, Buddhist philosophy has been concerned with defining and overcoming the limitations and errors of ordinary perception. To do this was essential to Buddhism`s central purpose of establishing a path and method for attaining liberation. Conceptual thought, in this view, is capable of leading to a liberating understanding. The author discusses the workings of both direct and conceptual cognition, drawing on a variety of Tibetan and Indian texts.
The Gelugpa interpretation of the Dignaga and Dharmakirti is greatly at variance with virtually all other scholarship concerning these seminal Buddhist logicians. Klein clarifies these differences, considering both traditional Buddhist and modern scholarship, thus establishing what is unique to the Gelugpa presentation and, in this light, examining reasons for the validity of this school`s interpretation.
"Anne Klein`s book presents vividly and intimately many concepts essential to a deeper understanding of Buddhist philosophy. I highly recommend this book."Jeffrey Hopkins. |
