Synopsis:
A complete translation of Jamyang Shayba's Root Text of Tenets and Ngawang Peldens's commentary and annotations, supplemented with explanations from Jamyang Shayba's autocommentary.

In Tibet, schools of Buddhist and non-Buddhist Indian philosophy were systematized in texts called "presentations of tenets" in order to get a handle on the plethora of philosophical systems inherited from India. Focal topics and issues of these schools are studied in order to stimulate inquiry and to encourage development of an inner faculty capable of investigating experiences so as to penetrate their reality. Systematic study provided a gradual approach to subtle topics so as to avoid confusion with less subtle ones. The longest and perhaps most famous of these presentations is Jamyang Shayba's Great Exposition of Tenets, published as a commentary to his Root Text of Tenets. The terseness of the text led Ngawang Pelden to write a brilliant set of annotations named Freeing the Knots of the Difficult Points.

Now in this book by Hopkins, culminating forty years of Tibetan studies, he presents these pathways to reality. These maps lead through focal topics of Indian and Tibetan paths to reality, arriving, hopefully, in sight of the profound mode of being.
