Synopsis:
The Buddha Sãkyamuni, seated on a lotus throne with his right hand the bhumisparsa mudrã, emanates the boundless joy of enlightenment to all beings. Around the Buddha are depictions of events in his previous lives. Above, the Bhagavan is a compassionate elephant who sacrifices his life to save 500 starving exiles. To the lower right, the Buddha is a selfless monkey-king who gives his own life to save his subjects. To the left of the Buddha is portrayed his life as a golden pheasant who offers himself to a group of hunters in place of his flock. These stories are related in the Jatakas retold in Aryasura’s Jatakamala. |
