Synopsis: The texts of the Zhang Zhung snyan-rgyud are of great importance for the understanding of the historical development of Dzogchen in early Tibet. This volume includes translations from the Tibetan of the Dzogchen teachings originally transmitted by the master Tapihritsa to his disciple Nangzher Lodpo at the Darok lake in Zhang Zhung, north-west Tibet. Also included are hagiographies of the principal masters of this tradition in ancient times, extending back to the primordial Buddha. Appendices in the book present explanations of the Ngondro preliminary parctices for this tradition according to the oral instruction of Lopon Tenzin Namdak.
The original Dzogchen teachings are found equally in the old Nyingma traditions of Tibetan Buddhism and the pre-Buddhist Bon religion. Both traditions claim unbroken lineages of transmission coming down to the present day from at least the 8th century, if not before. Moreover, both schools assert that Dzogchen did not originate in Tibet itself, or even in India, but in Central Asia - in Tazig, or ancient Persia, and Uddiyana. Dzogchen is regarded as the ultimate teaching of the Buddhas and it concerns the natural state of the nature of mind, one's own Buddha nature - an unconditioned state of being and awareness, even beyond the tantric process of transformation, that is beyond all time, conditioning, and causality. |
