Synopsis: PAL UK/European format. A remarkable special time lapse film recording made over six days during the visit of the Dalai Lama to Glasgow, Scotland in 2004, following the making of the intricate sand mandala of Mitrukpa, or Akshobya. The Buddha Akshobya transforms ignorance and stupidity into the wisdom of the all pervading awareness.
A depiction of a Buddha's palace, the unique design of the mandala is made from millions of grains of coloured sand, painstakingly laid in place by the monks in the traditional design detailed in the Buddhist texts.
At the heart of the mandala is the symbol of the Buddha Akshobya (known as Mitrukpa in Tibetan) - the vajra with the retinue of eight Buddhas. During the initiation, the practitioner imagines entering the centre of the mandala through one of the four magnificently decorated gates in the palace walls, outside which is a garden, surrounded by the 64 petals of the lotus flower, protected by a ring of vajras and finally a rainbow-coloured ring of fire.
The mandala is made in particular to remove the negative effects associated in any way in the taking of life. Its completion over a period of six days is followed by the initiation and its ceremonial destruction, also serving as a lesson in the impermanence of all things. |
