Synopsis:
The author presents the story of the rise of Chan Buddhism (known as Zen in Japanese), concentrating on an important but neglected period of Chan history when monks and rulers created the so-called Chan "golden age" and the principles of Chan identity. Zen apologists in the twentieth century, Welter argues, sold the world of Zen as a transcendental spiritualism untainted by political and institutional involvements. Welter claims the opposite is true: relationships between Chan monks and political rulers were fundamental to Chan's success.

"This is a fascinating and very important study of the history of the development of the Chan/Zen monastic institution as seen through a careful reading of the denglu or transmission records. While other books have examined the institution of the literary texts of Chan, this is the very first work in English to provide a sociopolitical historical account based on a group of writings that is crucial for understanding how Chan Buddhism took hold and beacme the dominant religious movement in the Song dynasty. Anybody interested in the role of Chan/Zen in Chinese society will want to read and digest the contents of this book." Steven Heine.
