The eccentric romantic visionary of German cinema, Werner Herzog, famous for films like Aguirre: Wrath of God, Nosferatu, and the Enigma of Kasper Hauser, creates a compelling documentary following the Dalai Lama and the remarkable tradition of the Kalachakra for world peace given to hundreds of thousands of pilgrims in India - and one year later, at a similar ceremony in Austria. This is a fascinating film, giving insight into this ancient practice and its secret rituals, including the painstaking construction of the sand mandala and interviews with the Dalai Lama. On an artistic level, Herzog mixes stylistic poses and environmental landscapes within the structure of the documentary, including footage of pilgrims at Mount Kailash in Tibet.
