Synopsis:
This is a delightful film about the art of cooking and the art of cooking your life by Zen priest Edward Espe Brown, author of the million selling Tassajara Bread book.

During the summer of 2006 Doris Dorrie filmed Edward Brown at his cooking classes at the Buddhist centre Schiebbs in Austria and at the two Californian Buddhist centres, the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center and the Zen Center in San Francisco. Brown demonstrates that eating is more than just the intake of food. Cooking is a festival of the senses, and an art of love and generosity.

His recipes are simple but rich in taste and aroma. The camera captures the flour-covered table, the dough, the radishes, oranges and carrots. One learns to understand the liveliness of yeast as cakes, pizza, and bread are baked. The film also follows the lectures by Brown, which are based on the ancient Soto Zen tradition of master Dogen. Dogen wrote a famous cookbook for life in which he encouraged his students to discover Buddha in simple kitchen chores, like washing rice or kneading dough.

Practical and entertaining, Brown knows how to translate these philosophical thoughts into today's language. What is the meaning of cooking and eating for the community and the individual? How does cooking reflect our attitude toward life and the world? Edward Espe Brown is a happy priest - to him the whole world can be found in a watermelon.
