New edition of this acclaimed translation from the renowned Chinese version by Kumarajiva. Originally in Sanskrit, though best known through its Chinese versions, the Lotus Sutra is one of the most influential and popular texts of Mahayana Buddhism, emphasising the bodhisattva path to enlightenment and that the Buddha is not to be delimited in time or space. The work is famous and beloved throughout the Far East for its parables; for its presentation of abstract religious concepts in concrete images; for the fascinating innumerable beings that people the work; and for the charm, warmth, and directness of its style.

This translation has been made from the most renowned of the Chinese versions, by Kumarajiva. However, it also includes translations of passages of the Sanskrit that are omitted from the Chinese versions or differ sharply from the Chinese.

Originally published in 1976, Hurvitz's monumental translation of the Lotus Sutra is the work scholars have preferred for decades and was hailed as an extraordinary and magnificent achievment.
