Synopsis:
A new look at the classic stories of the life of the Buddha which offers an original interpretation of Buddhist myth and tradition. In the first part of the book the author presents a full account of these stories, drawn from various texts of Theravada Buddhism. In the process, he brings to the fore dimensions of the legends that have been largely ignored by Western scholarship. In part two, Penner offers his own interpretations of the legends. He takes issue with the common Western assertion that " Buddhism is an other-worldly ascetic religion". His central thesis is that the "householder" or lay person is a necessary element in Buddhism and that the tradition of offerings and gifts, which creates merit and presupposes the doctrine of karma, mediates the relation between householder and monk. He argues that the omission of the householder - in his view one-half of what constitutes Buddhism as a religion - is fatal for any understanding of Buddha's life or of the Buddhist tradition.

"A masterful account of the life of the Buddha from the perspective of a scholar who has devoted a good part of his career to the task of understanding how we should interpret mythology. His thesis is that Western scholarly efforts to glean a historical core from the largely mythic life of the Buddha have led us to misunderstand what the authors of Buddhist texts and their readers have taken the Buddha to be. Excellent work; a pleasure to read and ponder." Dale S.Wright.

"Does an outstanding job of exploring and explaining with great care and subtlety the multiple aspects of the Shakyamuni's life and times. It is thoroughly researched, nicely illustrated, and should be of great interest for scholars and of wide appeal for students." Steven Heine.
