Synopsis: This book is a complete resource for the Longchen Nyingthig preliminaries. The root texts of Longchen Nyingthig contain a liturgy for doing the preliminary practices. It was written by the first Dodrupchen Rinpoche who was one of the heart disciples of Jigme Lingpa. This book contains a fresh translation of the liturgy. At the same time, it words the liturgy in a way that is convenient for recitation in English.
There are three commentaries to it included here, each showing the practice from a different perspective. The commentary of the first Khyentse Rinpoche, Khyentse Wangpo, is a manual of procedures for the practice. There is one by Yukhog Chadralwa, a highly realized master of the late twentienth century whose works have not been seen in English so far. His is an advanced commentary that shows how the preliminaries lead into the main practices of Thregcho and Thogal.
To aid clarification for Westerners the author Tony Duff has also written an extensive commentary that elucidates the meaning of the liturgy in clear English. His commentary includes deep explanations by the current Dodrupchen. There are a number of prayers and supplications that are usually done with this practice. Therefore, several prayers and support practices are included.
If you are about to embark on the Longchen Nyingthig preliminary practices, you will find that this is one of the most complete and clear presentation available of the materials needed. For others, this compilation of materials with its clear translations and support material will doubtless give further insights into the Longchen Nyingthig system as a whole and certainly to the approach of Dzogchen dharma in general. In addition, there are many comments, definitions, and explanations which will be of great use to translators.
The following texts are included (along with Tibetan texts): The Waking Practice by Jigme Lingpa, The Speech Blessing, the Preliminaries Liturgy by Jigme Trinley Ozer called "The Excellent Path to Omniscience" An Ordered Recitation for the Longchen Nyingthig Great Completion Preliminaries, the Commentary to it by Khyentse Wangpo called "The Nectar of Profound Meaning" the Visualization Procedures of the Preliminaries of Longchen Nyingthig Great Completion Wrapped Up, the prayer by Padmasambhava called "The Prayer That Spontaneously Fulfills Wishes". |
