Synopsis: This print depicts the forty-two ‘peaceful’ (Tib. zhi) and fifty-eight ‘wrathful’ (Tib. khro) deities that constitute the Bardo or Zhitro (Zhi-khro) Mandala of the Hundred Peaceful and Wrathful Deities. All of these deities are described in the Bardo Thodol, the ‘Great Liberation by Hearing in the Intermediate State’, now more commonly known as ‘The Tibetan Book of The Dead’, where they arise in sequence from the heart, throat and crown chakras during the symbolic forty-nine day period of the ‘intermediate state’ (bardo) that occurs between death and rebirth. The forty-two peaceful deities are assembled around Samantabhadra and the Five Buddhas in the top area of this composition. While in the lower half are the wrathful manifestations of these six Buddhas with their fearful retinues of animal, bird and demonic-headed dakinis. The iconography of each deity in this mandala is completely accurate, and it is rare to find a Bardo thangka-print with this degree of clarity and precision. |
