Synopsis: UK/European PAL region 2 format. In the face of terror, their greatest weapon was faith...Based on a true story, the kidnapping and murder of seven French monks in Algeria in 1996, Of Gods and Men is a Cannes prize winning revelation. A timely and intelligent rumination on the relationship between Christianity and Islam, it's also beautifully acted, scripted and photographed. Beauvois depicts the lives of a group of monks who live in a Cistercian monastery in the sun drenched landscape of Algeria. They live out an unchanging daily ritual of praying and farming. When a group of Croatian workers are murdered, the local mayor urges them to move away. This forces a crisis of conscience amongst the brothers, heightened by the arrival of a fundamentalist militia group. Fear sweeps through the region and the brothers are faced with the dilemma to either abandon their monastery and the local Muslim community who depend on them, or with making the courageous decison to stay. Building to an extraordinarily moving climax, this is a beautifully directed and immaculately performed award-winning drama.
UK/European PAL format, region 2. In French with English subtitles.
Special features: The Victims of Tibhirine: a further inquiry documentary; theatrical trailer.
"When the inevitable lists of the 10 best films of the year come around, there's little doubt that Xavier Beaujois's Cannes runner-up will feature in most of them. Based on real events, and set in the Algeria of 1995, when Islamist fundamentals terrorised the country, this quiet but resonant film has a group of French Cistercian monks refusing the offer of military protection and determined to continue living in peace and harmony with their Arab villager neighbours...Beauvois, with the aid of some superlative performances from Wilson, Michael Lonsdale and Olivier Rabourdin in particular, succeeds in making a film that delves as deeply as he can into the miracle of faith without constructing a film that is in any way a religious tract. He simply watches as the Cistercians go about their worship and charity fearful that perhaps God has deserted them but determined to do what they see as their duty, joining the villager's religious celebrations without seeking to convert them. This is a deeply humane and compassionate film, frightening because we know the probable outcome but moving because it tells us, often in the quietest details, what basic decency and goodness really means." Derek Malcolm, Evening Standard.
"This beautifully realised, meditative tale of monks and Muslims starring Lambert Wilson won the Grand Jury Prize at this year's (2010) Cannes Film Festival...Contains moving moments of pure cinematic bliss." Metro.
"Stunningly serious and passionate." (5 stars) Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian.
"A gripping depiction of religious passion." Kate Muir, The Times. |
