Synopsis: Vajrayogini appears here in her principal form as Naropa’s Dakini (Tib. Naro Khajoma). In the Newar Buddhist tradition Vajrayogini’s four main temples are located at sacred sites within the Kathmandu Valley, and the temple of Sankhu is dedicated to her aspect that is associated with the Indian Mahasiddha Naropa. This remote forest temple appears in the background of this painting, with the waterspouts located on its steep ascent appearing below. In the lower left corner is Naropa blowing on his antelope horn, with his cave and a stupa in the background. Above the water-tank arises Vajrayogini’s six-pointed ‘reality source’ or dharmodaya, with her pink lotus and sun disc above. She stands in alidha posture, with her right foot pressing on the breast of red Kalaratri, representing the ‘seat of desire’; and her left foot pressing on the head and heart of black Bhairava, representing the ‘seats of ignorance and aggression’. Vajrayogini is beautiful, youthful, naked and vermilion-red in colour, and she is adorned with gold and bone ornaments, a five-skull crown, a chained silver medallion, an ornate bone apron, and a garland of dry white skulls. Her long black hair hangs freely down her back, and her three eyes gaze blissfully upward towards the realm of the dakinis. With her lowered right hand she circles a vajra-handled curved knife, and with her raised left hand she tilts a skull-cup as she drinks the stream of fresh blood that pours from it. Her khatvanga or tantric staff rests across her left shoulder, and she abides within a blazing mass of wisdom fire. Seated amidst the clouds with a radiant blue aura in the upper left corner is white Vairocana Buddha, the ‘Lord of the Tathagata Family’ to which Vajrayogini belongs. And in the upper right corner is red Vajradharma, who manifests as the ‘speech’ aspect of Vajradhara Buddha in the ‘mother-tantra’ practices of Vajrayogini. |
