Synopsis: In this sequel to the best selling Ancient Wisdom Modern World the Dalai Lama enters the contemporary debate about religion versus atheism, and returns to the theme of ethics with this major new work, Beyond Religion.
In 1999 the Dalai Lama's book Ancient Wisdom Modern World was published, which addressed the question of ethics for the new millennium. A decade later, His Holiness returns to address this topic again.
In this thought provoking new book the Dalai Lama argues that religion is not a necessity for pursuing a spiritual life. Rather, focusing on tolerance and understanding between religions, as well as tolerance and understanding between believers (of any faith) and non-believers is the way forward. The way to achieve such an approach, he proposes, is through a system of secular ethics grounded in a deep appreciation of our common humanity. Aimed at the general reader, Beyond Religion is a modern day polemic which outlines those ethics he believes should be central to our lives.
"We need to recognize two things. The first is that religion is not the only way to pursue a spiritual life. There are indeed ways of living the fulfilling and contented lives we all desire which do not require religious belief. The second is that in order to build a harmonious and peaceful world, we require more than just tolerance and understanding between the verious religions. We also need mutual tolerance and understanding between believers (of whatever faith) and non believers - between those with religion and those without...In my view, the most promising avenue is to be found in a system of secular ethics grounded in a deep appreciation of our common humanity." The Dalai Lama. |
