Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825) was a masterful producer of Japanese woodblock prints, known especially for his portrayals of scenes from Kabuki, which were praised for their realism. Elavating the concept and the technique of the actor print, the woodblock images created by Toyokuni - who served as head of the prestigious Utagawa school - capture actors at moments of dramatic intensity.
The images in this folio feature a young man (the famous actor Matsumoto Koshiro IV) and a group of courtesans in a greenhouse, amusing themselves at archery. |
