Synopsis:
This book provides a translation of a beautiful prayer which employs the symbolism of the ritual offering of butterlamps, where light is seen as the basis of the nonduality of all experience. The book contains the full ritual text so that readers can engage in its practice if they so choose. There is an extensive commentary focusing on the development of wisdom and compassion making the traditional text fully relevant to the modern reader.

In this butterlamp prayer the flow of light up as an offering to the Buddhas and out as a blessing to all beings is the basis for exploring the co-emergence of the finite and the infinite, of samsara and nirvana. The text of the prayer is given in recitation format along with the Sutra of the Story of the Lamp of the King Golden Hand and his Aspiration. Giving and receiving is the pulsation of exchange that connects all life. Breathing in, breathing out, blood entering the heart, then exiting - the ceaseless flow of intearction is life itself.

This prayer was written by Chimed Rigdzin Rinpoche, also known as C.R.Lama (1922-2002) - an important lama in the Khordong and Byangter lineages of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, while in retreat at Tso Pema in India. It arose as a gesture of love and longing for his guru, Tulku Tsorlo whom he'd had to leave in Tibet. The commentary by James Low highlights how to integrate these illuminating verses into the practice of staying present in the turbulence of everyday life.
