Synopsis: This is the sixth and final volume from the Foundation of Buddhist Thought series - the curriculum of a popular course developed by the Tibetan Gelugpa Lama Geshe Tashi Tsering especially for his Western students. Geshe Tashi is the resident Lama at Jamyang Buddhist Centre in London.
This volume deals specifically with the often misunderstood topic of Buddhist tantra and the practical significance of tantric rituals. Geshe Tashi discusses Indo-Tibetan Buddhist deities, initiations, mandalas, and the body's subtle physiology of channels and chakras, in a friendly and direct manner and addresses the questions that Westerners often have upon first encountering tantra's colourful imagery and veiled language.
Tantric Buddhism, or Vajrayana, provides a quicker path to Buddhahood by means of dissolving the body's "wind" energies into the central channel at the heart, mimicking the transformations of consciousness that occur at the time of death. Guiding readers systematically from tantra's generation stage through to the full enlightenment of the completion stage, Geshe Tashi also includes a simple tantric compassion practice written by the Dalai Lama, using it to demonstrate the building blocks common to all such visualization techniques. This volume on tantra is a fitting culmination to the approachable and practical wisdom in this Foundation of Thought series.
"With this series of books drawn from his highly successful courses, Geshe Tashi Tsering's insights can be enjoyed by a wide audience of both specialists and newcomers to the Buddhist tradition. His presentations, never divorced from the basic humanity and warmth of his personality, combine rigour and accessibility." Geshe Thubten Jinpa. |
