Synopsis:
Other Emptiness, or Shentong, is a profound view of emptiness, particulary taught in the Kagyu tradition. The early lineage holder Milarepa sang many songs of realization which present it and two especially important ones are translated here - "An Authentic Expression of the Middle Way" and "Ultimate Ground, Path, Conduct, and Fruition". These fresh translations presented here come with full explanations based on teachings heard by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso, Thrangu Rinpoche, and others. These explanations have the special feature of being the actual instructions of the lineage. They are practical in nature and free of convoluted philosophical argument. Thus, the teaching of Shentong is clearly shown as a practical instruction, using the teachings of the Kagyu lineage.

This book has an extensive introduction by the author Tony Duff which helps clarify the view and meditation of Shentong for scholars and practitioners alike. Shentong has not been well understood in the West, where it is often thought of as a complicated and possibly questionable philosophical view. It has been particularly overshadowed by the views of some schools, especially the Gelug, who have argued against it. In fact, claims the author, Shentong is the penultimate teaching of the sutras and the root of all tantras. "This book shows for the first time that the Buddha did not teach this ultimate of views as a complicated philosophy for scholarly argument, but as a practical view to be used for the attainment of enlightenment." Tony Duff.

Includes Tibetan texts of the songs.
