Synopsis: Due August 2012. The twelve elegant scrolls and screens reproduced in this wall calendar, dating from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries, depict the beauty of the four seasons.
Through the centuries, scrolls and screens have provided forms within which Japanese artists have created some of their most captivating works. Made of paper and and silk decorated with ink, watercolours, and gold leaf, they show various influences, including native literature, Buddhist iconography, and Chinese painting and calligraphy. Dating from the fourteenth through the eighteenth centuries, the elegant paintings reproduced in this calendar are from the collections of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
