Synopsis:
This calendar features the work of Kawase Hasui (1883–1957), a leading artist in Japan’s shin hanga (new print) movement, who was inspired by European Impressionism and incorporated Western elements into his paintings of traditional Japanese scenes. His specialty was exquisitely rendered landscapes, which he sketched with watercolors as he traveled throughout Japan. These sketches were later transformed into woodblock prints - such as the twelve reproduced here - by the skillful artisans at the printing studio of publisher Watanabe Shozaburo.
