Synopsis: Hakuin (1686-1769) was the reviver of Rinzai Zen Buddhism in Japan, and Hakuin's teachings, as organised by him and his disciples form the basis for all Rinzai Zen taught today. "Rinzai Zen is Hakuin Zen, and all present-day masters trace themselves back to him."
Professor Yampolsky gives a brief historical survey and appraisal of Zen in Japan in his introduction. No detailed commentaries on the works of Hakuin exist even in Japan, and the translator provides, when they are readily determinable, explanations of difficult references and allusions in the texts. Included is an appendix that describes briefly the voluminous works of Hakuin.
"Indispensible for a proper understanding of Zen in its historical setting." Journal of the American Oriental Society.
"This is a book that will yield treasures to the general reader, student, and specialist on every level." Choice. |
