Synopsis: This work takes up the semiotic strand in Chinese Mahayana Buddhist philosophical texts and relates it to Derridean deconstruction. The book identifies certain gaps in Buddhist and post-modern studies and confronts some of the dilemmas that have frustrated modern scholars who wish to reconcile a Madhyamaka theory of knowledge with a radical doctrine of emptiness that undermines the possibility of such a theory.
This is a semiotic study of a corpus of texts that Kumarajiva, Paramartha, and Xuanzang transmitted to China from India. The philosophical arguments and the principle of coherence underlying these texts have been unduly understudied until now. The first five chapters discuss the semiotic themes in the Buddhist systems of Sarvastivada, Sauntrantika, Madhyamaka and Vijnanavada. The last chapter explores the critical potential of Buddhist semiotic thought by applying a semiotic model encountered in the Madhyamaka and Vijnanavada systems to a study of Derrida`s deconstruction of western metaphysics. |
