Koans are pithy, enigmatic utterances used for religious training in the Zen Buddhist tradition. This important work explores the full range of historical significance and symbolic meaning of koans in the formation of Zen Buddhism. Dating back to the early Zen masters of the T'ang era in China, this innovative practice is one of the most distinctive elements of Zen Buddhism. Despite the richness and diversity of the koan tradition, revious studies have focused almost exclusively on the role of koans in the internal debates among Zen sects.
